Sport scale model of the postwar four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. Designed by Pat Tritle, the Orion spans 84.5" and is designed for six channel RC operation: rudder, elevator, aileron, throttle, flaps, and retracts.
This is a prototype design, with many details (such as the engine nacelles and motor selection) left to the builder. The completed model shown in the photograph was built by Brian Allen. It represents the AEW&C variant with a rotodome adapted from the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye that Lockheed unsuccessfully tried to interest the Navy in. The U.S. Customs Service operated this model of the P-3 Orion for drug interdiction and aerial surveillance.
Our short kit contains only laser cut balsa and plywood parts and full-size printed plans. It DOES NOT contain any plastic parts or the AWACS dome. Construction of the nacelles is not shown on the plans, and the short kit DOES NOT contain any parts for the engine nacelles. There are no instructions, and this is an untested design, so there may be parts fit issues that the builder will have to deal with.
