Sport scale model of the postwar four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft developed for the United States Navy and introduced in the 1960s. Designed by Pat Tritle, the Orion spans 85" and is designed for six channel RC operation: rudder, elevator, aileron, throttle, flaps, and retracts.
This is a prototype design, with many details (such as the engine nacelles and motor selection) left to the builder. The completed model shown in the photograph was built by Brian Allen. It represents the AEW&C variant with a rotodome adapted from the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye that Lockheed unsuccessfully tried to interest the Navy in. The U.S. Customs Service operated this model of the P-3 Orion for drug interdiction and aerial surveillance.
Our short kit contains only laser cut balsa and plywood parts and printed plans. It DOES NOT contain any plastic parts or the AWACS dome. The half-size version is available on request - please email for details.
